Cossacks from the Czech Republic to Paraguay: the project "Legacy of those who left their homeland"

From Europe to South America - The Civil War in the Russian Empire scattered Cossack troops around the world. But largely thanks to emigration, the Cossacks and their heirs managed to preserve memories of life before the October Revolution and relics of a bygone era. The project "The Legacy of Those Who Left the Homeland" is aimed at preserving the historical memory of the unknown heroes of the past.
As the project manager Irina Shcherbakova said, the idea of the project arose thanks to cooperation with the Cossacks of the All-Cossack Union of the Czech Lands and Slovakia. They told that the archive and belongings of the Terek Cossack-emigrant Viktor Karpushkin, which his daughter Nina brought from the USA, were preserved.
"His memoirs became the basis of our project, they reflect that time. From them we can learn what happened in the Vladikavkaz cadet corps, how the Cossacks lived before the revolution. He describes the civil war as an eyewitness from the trenches, he describes the mood in the army, what they thought Cossacks about Denikin and Wrangel. There is very little such evidence left. We consider this manuscript a valuable heritage that has survived abroad, "says Irina.
In addition to her memoirs, Nina Karpushkina gave the Terek Cossacks a valuable family relic - her father's headdress - and an icon.
But there is also other evidence of the life of the Cossacks in exile - the memories of Anastasia Manstein-Shirinskaya, who arrived in Tunisia with her parents as an eight-year-old girl. Anastasia became an elder of the Russian community in Tunisia and wrote a book of memoirs "Bizerte. The Last Camp", published in French and Russian.
Paraguay has become another haven for the Cossacks who were forced to leave their homeland. One of the "Paraguayans" was the last chieftain of the Terek army, Sergei Fleischer. The Cossacks and Russian officers who came to Paraguay, according to Irina, literally created the army and navy of this country. When the Chaco war with Bolivia began, Russian officers defended Paraguay and helped the country win. In the capital of Paraguay, 17 streets are named after Russian officers and Cossacks.
The great-grandson of the ataman Igor Fleischer handed over to the Terek Cossacks the materials preserved after the death of his grandfather. All these materials will form the basis of a documentary-historical film about the White emigrants on the example of the life of Viktor Karpushkin, the sailors of the Russian squadron in Tunisia and the Cossacks who created the army and navy of Paraguay. This film will also be transferred to the Stavropol Regional Library for the Blind and Visually Impaired. V. Mayakovsky, where he will be prepared for perception by blind people.
The Heritage of Those Who Left Their Homeland project was among the winners of the Presidential Grants Competition in 2021. The Presidential Grants Fund will donate about 1.8 million rubles to the Khopertsy Charitable Foundation of the Stavropol Territory for the implementation of the project.
In addition to the film, an electronic and printed book "The Life of Viktor Vasilyevich Karpushkin" will be published at the expense of the President's grant. In addition, there will be a conference dedicated to the anniversary of the end of the Civil War and the 100th anniversary of the "Russian Aid Action" organized by the Czechoslovak government in 1921 for Russian refugees, and a historical quest dedicated to the events of the Civil War.
Already now, the history of the Cossack emigrants can be found on the multimedia portal "The Legacy of Those Who Left Their Homeland", which presents materials about the Civil War and the Russian Exodus. In the future, an audiobook for blind people will be created from the materials of the site, which will be transferred to the Stavropol Regional Library for the Blind and Visually Impaired.

A new nationality "Don Cossack" will appear in the Russian census

Residents of the Don region will be able to self-determine by nationality. This was stated by the head of Rostovstat Marina Samoilova. “Rosstat has compiled and approved a dictionary of nationalities, containing more than two thousand possible answers to the question of nationality. Of these, using the word "Cossack" - thirteen options. Also included in the directory are the phrases "Don Cossacks", "Russian Cossacks", "Orthodox Cossacks" and others, "she said.
Residents of the Rostov region will be able to determine their nationality during the census but nationa-bolshevik Writer, politician and publicist Zakhar Prilepin criticized this decision, calling it "a direct path to separatism." He recalled that the Cossacks are a military class, but not a nation. With the same success, you can include in the list of nationalities and archers. And in general, scientists and officials, who thought of this before, should be driven out of their posts and brought to justice, the politician is sure.

The 100th anniversary of the Russian Exodus was widely celebrated in Crimea

Kerch honored the memory of all those who more than a hundred years ago were forced to leave their homeland as a result of the fratricidal war.

On April 25, 2021, within the framework of the Days of Remembrance dedicated to the centenary of the Russian Exodus , flowers were laid at the cross at the Kerch sea station, according to the official website of the Heritage Foundation .

The event was attended by the orchestra of the 115th separate special-purpose brigade of the Russian National Guard under the direction of Major Daniil Rafailov. The banner group of reenactors of the Drozdovsky regiment from St. Petersburg with an exact copy of the regimental banner stood guard at the cross. Representatives of the military-historical club "Rubezh" from Maikop and the Union of Societies "Heritage of the Empire" from the village of Otradnoye of the Krasnodar Territory, the Kerch-Yenikalsky khutor Cossack society of the Black Sea Cossack Host lined up nearby. Representatives of the Kerch community were also present at the laying of flowers.

The audience was addressed by the President of the Heritage NBF, Lieutenant General Leonid Reshetnikov, who thanked the representatives of the Black Sea Cossack army, Donets, Tertsy for their work on restoring the historical memory of millennial Russia.

“Why are we holding the Days of Remembrance dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Russian Exodus? To learn from the terrible events of more than a century ago. We are trying to tell the truth about the Civil War so that such a split, such hatred does not repeat itself in our country. This war has divided people. As a result, the country lost millions of the best sons of the Fatherland: military men, inventors, scientists, writers, engineers. We must know and remember this tragedy. We have one truth - love for Russia, ”Reshetnikov emphasized in his speech.

Further, a funeral lithium was served for all those who died during the Civil War and who left for the Exodus, flowers were laid at the memorial Cross. After that, everyone went to the embankment of Kerch, where a military-historical reconstruction of the episode of the Russian Exodus took place with the participation of more than 300 reenactors representing military-historical clubs from all over Russia.

To immerse the audience in the era of a century ago, from 11 am on the embankment, interactive platforms were open, where they showed weapons, uniforms, medicine of that time, it was possible to enroll in the Volunteer or Red Army. People dressed in the fashion of a century ago were walking along the embankment.

Children and older people enjoyed examining the Lanchester armored car and the 1902 Russian cannon. Here, like yesterday in the Leninsky District, history was at arm's length. Reenactors talked about the peculiarities of uniforms, weapons, medicine, took pictures with those who wish.

The event was attended by the head of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Crimea A.V. Novoselskaya and the head of the administration of Kerch S.V. Borozdin.

In 1920, Kerch became the last city where the Russian flag was lowered, from where more than 40 thousand citizens of the Russian Empire departed into obscurity. Therefore, the choice of the venue for the festival is not accidental. The first part of the reconstruction was an action with elements of a theatrical production, reproducing episodes of the evacuation in November 1920, based on historical documents and memoirs. The loading of military and civilians on the ship was shown. Two ships participated in the reconstruction - the 100-seater "Chernomorye" and the replica minesweeper KTShch # 581 "Tuapse". According to the scenario, after loading the main part of the reenactors, "Chernomorye", having given a signal, departed from the coast. A wreath was launched from its side in memory of those "who had no place in their homeland." After that, stragglers appeared on the embankment, and the offensive of the Bolsheviks began,a fight ensued. The minesweeper covered the stragglers by firing from the water.

The reconstruction scenario based on historical materials was prepared by the commander of the VIC "Consolidated Officer's General Markov Regiment" Colonel G.A. Yakovitsky. The music was specially selected. The following compositions were performed: G. Kitler "Expectation", Polonaise by Mikhail Oginsky "Farewell to the Motherland", march "Longing for the Motherland", Mozart "Requiem for a Dream", March of Kornilovtsev, March of Markovtsev, Antonio Vivaldi "Tango of Death" and others. The course of the production was covered by the commentator - a military historian from St. Petersburg B.G. Kipnis. Thanks to the dramatic script and professional, captivating commentary, viewers were able to experience unforgettable emotions and feel everything that happened in their city more than a hundred years ago. Many had tears in their eyes. At the end of the action, the audience thanked the reenactors with applause.

According to the deputy commander of the VIC "Consolidated Officer General Markov Regiment" Captain D. Wilhelm, the past two-day festival has become the largest of such events in the Civil War in our country over the past five years and unique - for the first time the reconstruction of the events of the Russian Exodus was shown, loading on ship.

A monument dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the end of the Civil War was unveiled in Sevastopol

A monument dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the end of the Civil War in Russia was opened in Sevastopol.

Recall that the original idea was to erect a monument to Russian people forced to flee from the Bolsheviks who occupied the country. Hence the place of installation - the embankment of Sevastopol, from where, among other things, the patriots of Russia went into exile. Then the Russian Military Historical Society got down to business, and the monument turned into a "monument to the reconciliation of the Reds and Whites." It is noteworthy that particular dissatisfaction was expressed by the ideological and spiritual heirs of the Russophobes-Bolsheviks, who announced the rehabilitation of the "unfinished counter".

The monument was opened on the coast of the Quarantine Bay of Sevastopol, from there a view of the Tauric Chersonesos and St. Vladimir's Cathedral opens up. Nearby in the roadstead are lined up the sailing ship "Chersonesos", the patrol ships of the Black Sea Fleet "Pytlivy" and "Ladny" and the oldest naval ship in Russia and in the world, in service - the rescue ship "Volkhov" (Bolshevik nickname "Commune"), built in 1913 ...

The ceremony was attended by Assistant to the President, Chairman of the RVIO Vladimir Medinsky, Governor of Sevastopol Mikhail Razvozhaev, Commander of the Black Sea Fleet Vice Admiral Igor Osipov, Senator Yekaterina Altabaeva, Deputy of the Russian State Duma Pyotr Tolstoy , the military and the public.

“There is nothing worse when a split occurs within one state, one family. This monument to the 100th anniversary of the end of the Civil War is a memorial to its tragedy. Dedicated to its participants, all the sons of Russia. This is the first such large-scale memorial in Russia. We must remember this lesson of history - a house, destroyed from the inside, as it is said, will not stand. We can be very different, but we are one people, and we have one Russia, ”said Vladimir Medinsky.

On a high pedestal, a female figure is the image of Russia, the image of a mother calling for the reconciliation of her sons, who were raised by the Civil War. Their figures are located at the foot of the pedestal. At the foot of the column, on three sides, poems dedicated to these tragic days by poets Maximilian Voloshin, Marina Tsvetaeva, Nikolai Turoverov, and also Mikhail Sholokhov are engraved in stone on three sides.

The author of the monument is sculptor, chairman of the Union of Artists of Russia Andrey Kovalchuk.

From IA "Legitimist": On the monument is written "We are one people, and we have one Russia." Given that the slogan of the whites was indeed "United and indivisible Russia", and the slogan of the red was "Workers of all countries unite", i.e. the slogan of the world revolution, to which they sacrificed Russia. The activation of the supporters of the Reds in the recent (see, for example, previously published news) clearly indicates that there is no desire for reconciliation on their part.

The battle for Vyselki, First Kuban campaign of the Russian Civil War, reconstrution held

On March 13, the Cossacks of the Regional Representation of SKVRiZ in the Republic of Adygea, headed by their ataman, head of the department of the Tsargrad Society, Sergei Fomin, plunged into the atmosphere of the Civil War. On the fields near the village of Vyselki, Krasnodar Territory, a reconstruction of the battle of the First Kuban campaign ("Ice" campaign) took place. Historical clubs in Moscow, Kuban and other regions of the country with the participation of Cossacks and representatives of various public Cossack associations reproduced the battles between units of the Volunteer and Red armies.

All participants in the reconstruction were armed with blank weapons. From the memoirs of the hero of the Civil War, General Bogaevsky AP: “... For the entire 2½-month“ Ice campaign ”, among the fifty battles that we had to endure, the battle for Vyselki, early in the morning of March 3, left in my memory the most heavy recollection ... We took Selenium, but at the cost of some desperate efforts and sacrifices! .. "

The organizers of the reconstruction made strict demands on the appearance of the participants. They must wear uniforms and equipment from the period 1914-1918. But the use of elements of the form of the imperial army, volunteer chevrons with the colors of the national flag, stripes, chevrons and shoulder straps of shock units of the 1917 model were also allowed. Those who were in the role of the Red Guards cannot used cockades on their headdresses in the form of a red star and insignia of the command staff of the Red Army of the 1918-1922 model, as well as "budenovka". Recall that by order of the Revolutionary Military Council, "Budennovka" became an official winter headdress only in January 1919.

"On the distant approaches, the Partisan and Consolidated Officer Regiments lay down from heavy machine-gun fire and are preparing to meet the attack of the Reds. The Reds are attacking. White volleys force the sailors and Red Army men to retreat to their positions. After that, until the Reds were entrenched, the regiments unanimously attack the Reds' defense, hack into it and occupy the first line. The Reds retreat to the second line. The field of a short skirmish between the lines of the Reds and Whites, Partizansky and Consolidated Officer, at the command of the commanders, attack the second line of defense, engage in bayonet battle with the sailors and the Red Guards. They win and try to occupy the third line of defense on the move. But there the Red forces have two machine guns that stop the desperate attack. White retreats to the second line, the Reds consolidate at the third, last line. After some lull, both white regiments begin the last battle, where after 2-3 attacks the last one follows, where the red forces are partially killed, partially surrendered."

A group of 30 people from the Irkutsk, Zabaikalsk, Black Sea Cossack troops, as well as volunteers from Irkutsk and Ulan-Ude, crossed Lake Baikal on the ice on March 6 in memory of the Siberian ice campaign of 1920, the BaikalPost news agency reported in the press center of the Oblastnaya newspaper. “The ice trip will go from Listvyanka to the Tankhoi railway station, the distance is about 40 kilometers. The patriotic community has been carrying out such transitions since 2004. ”

The Cossacks passed from Listvyanka to Tankhoy, taking into account the bypassing hummocks and cracks, the length of the route was about 45 kilometers, the travel time was 15 hours. The participants started after the prayer service in the Church of St. Nicholas in Listvyanka, which began at 6.30.

“The transition turned out to be not easy - the last 10 kilometers the path ran through deep snow and hummocks, but, despite all the difficulties, by 9 o'clock in the evening the trailing part of the group entered Tankhoy,” the commander of the detachment, chief of staff of the Irkutsk Cossack army esaul Valery Bobrov is quoted in the message ...

The rally is dedicated to the final stage of the Civil War in Eastern Siberia, when in mid-February 1920 the remnants of the retreating Russian army of General Kappel crossed Lake Baikal and went to Chita. Historically, the route of the Siberian ice campaign in 1920 ran from the village of Bolshoye Goloustnoye to the town of Babushkin in Buryatia. At that time, about 35 thousand people, including women and children, overcame Baikal on the ice. Similar transitions have been carried out since 2004.

Tchernetzov's Partisans Honored by the Don Cossacks

The days of memory of the legendary Don hero-partisan, Colonel Chernetsov and the young soldiers of his detachment were held in the Rostov region. Days of memory of the legendary Don Colonel Chernetsov and the young soldiers of his detachment were held on the Don. The Chernetsovites fought successfully, but at the end of January 1918, during one of the battles, they suffered serious losses, there were no reinforcements, at the same time several guns went out of order. As a result, 30 partisans were taken prisoner by the Cossacks, opponents of the military foreman Nikolai Golubov. Vasily Chernetsov was killed by a Cossack, a supporter of the establishment of a new government on the Don, Fyodor Podtyolkov. This fraternal battle is considered the beginning of the Civil War on the Don.

In memory of the events of those years, Days of Remembrance are held in the Rostov region, and in the places of the battles of the detachment - a historical reconstruction. Traditionally, this year students of the Shakhty Cossack Cadet Corps of General Baklanov took part in the events. So, in February, a creative evening "Lines Born by the Civil War" took place, during which Cossack cadets performed songs. Also, young people marched through the native village of Chernetsov - Kalitvenskaya, along the last path of his detachment to the place of the legendary battle. The cadets paid military honors on February 9th near the memorial cross at the site of the death of Chernetsovites, bowed to the ashes of Ataman Alexei Kaledin and young soldiers who were buried in the old Novocherkassk cemetery.

Vasily Mihailovich Tchernetzov (March 3, 1890 – January 23, 1918) was a Don Cossack Russian Imperial Army officer who served as a colonel in the Don Army. How the red army commander surrendered the city of Tsaritsyn to the whites

In the Civil War, out of 100 commanders of the red armies, 82 were military specialists. Of these, regular officers - 62. 5 people changed the Soviet power. One betrayal played a fatal role in the fate of our hero city, which bore the name Tsaritsyn in those years.

What are you uneducated boors!

The sun was rising. The sky was blue, the air was warmer, filled with bird noise. But the eight passengers of the car were now not up to the beauties of nature. They looked around anxiously, afraid to see the pursuit.

The farmstead was left behind, the overloaded car trudged along the off-road, shuddering heavily on bumps, now and then falling into potholes. Finally, the meanders of the Medveditsa River sparkled ahead. At the crossing the fugitives were met by a hundred Cossacks, peaks swaying overhead.

“Here is the guard of honor,” Nikolai Dmitrievich thought unhappily for some reason. - Now they will bring the bread and salt. Or a glass on a saber. "

An officer separated from the ranks, accompanied by three Cossacks, drove up to the car, said casually:

- General, by order of my superiors, I will arrest you. Take the trouble to hand over your checker, revolver and valuables.

“Here's to you, grandmother, and St. George's Day! Nikolai Dmitrievich gasped mentally. - Here is your word of honor of the Don Cossack! After all, they promised an honorable surrender, with the abandonment of the weapon.

But he didn't say anything out loud. Obediently he sat down in the car that had rolled over, a cornet sat down next to him, put the barrel of a revolver to the prisoner's temple, and made an evil promise:

- If you try to run, I'll shoot you.

The column began to move, on every bump the muzzle hit painfully in the temple of Nikolai Dmitrievich, he was seriously afraid of an accidental shot. And gloomy thoughts swarmed in my head: “These are idiots of high flight! The commander of the IX Soviet Army voluntarily came to you, brought information and documents of extreme importance, and you turn your nose away from him. What uneducated boors you are! "

Such were the circumstances of the flight from the Bolsheviks of Nikolai Dmitrievich Vsevolodov, commander of the IX Army, with his entire family. It happened on June 22, 1919, near the Sennaya farm, which was located 40 km from Mikhailovka. Vsevolodov himself recalled everything that happened, in his declining years found himself in New York and published his memoirs here.

Curious reading, I must admit. A participant in the First World War and the Civil War, Vsevolodov gives details of events, draws portraits of famous figures on different sides of the barricades. True, one cannot completely trust the memoirist - the old years, the obvious bias (not to say - a lie) do not allow relying on memories as a completely reliable source.

To begin with, Mr. Vsevolodov was not a general. He, constantly stumbling on the career ladder, rose to the rank of colonel of the General Staff in the pre-revolutionary Russian Empire. Moreover, without being in battles and campaigns, but only wiping breeches in various staff positions. However, he managed to become a knight of three orders: St. Stanislav 3rd and 2nd degree and St. Anna. For what deeds - God knows.

The Colonel's fate kept

Comparing various documents and studies (here the main merit belongs to the famous Russian historian Andrei Ganin), you come to the conclusion that the main driving force in the life of Nikolai Dmitrievich was personal interest. And the main motto is everything to the family! And he was strong and almost always and everywhere was with him, wherever fate threw him. His wife and three children followed him everywhere, for the sake of them he did the seemingly unthinkable and incredible in the conditions of war and revolutionary times.

It should be noted that fate, by and large, kept the colonel. The October Revolution began for him with his arrest and placement in prison. Many of his classmates disappeared there in the execution cellars. But Nikolai Dmitrievich remained alive and actively began his military career in the service of the victorious class. In 1918 he was already Chief of Staff of the IX Army.

The family, of course, is with him. In addition to fulfilling troublesome official duties, Nikolai Dmitrievich brought in animals - cows, pigs, and sold milk. How he managed to combine a high military post and low commerce, only he himself knows. But this practical vein will save the family in subsequent wanderings.

As a military leader, he is directly responsible for the fall of Red Verdun - Tsaritsyn. Vsevolodov, in violation of a direct order from the high command, instead of an offensive, organized the retreat of his army. As a result, Wrangel defeated the neighboring X army defending Tsaritsyn, and the city was taken by the Wrangel troops on June 30, 1919.

The most interesting thing is that, no matter how Vsevolodov tried later, to present his actions as thoughtful and initially aimed at defeating the red units, the researchers are inclined to conclude that this happened due to the mediocrity of the commander. But the fact is that the information provided by the colonel to the command of the whites allowed them, in addition to Tsaritsyn, to seize the cities of Balashov and Borisoglebsk. However, Vsevolodov and his family, as the reader already knows, was not met with bread and salt in the White Camp at first. The colonel was under investigation for half a year without receiving any assistance. But the commercial talent worked here too. Vsevolodov somehow managed to get a heating car, bought in the rear all sorts of shortages, such as soap, pins, matches, threads and other things, and successfully launched trade in the Taganrog markets.

In December 1919, the investigation concluded that Vsevolodov brought a lot of benefits to the White movement, he was accepted into secondary staff positions. Here his talent as a journalist was cut through, he was often published in the White Guard newspapers - his articles regularly appeared on the desk of the head of the Cheka Felix Dzerzhinsky, or even Lenin himself.

Vsevolodov's later life resembles an adventure novel. Even before the complete defeat of the whites, the colonel managed to take the family to Constantinople. Here he first started a car business, then opened a teahouse. Moved to Budapest soon after. He worked as a taxi driver. He managed to create a jazz orchestra, in which his two sons played - the former army commander himself rather briskly drummed on the keys of the piano.

During the Second World War, Vsevolodov was already the owner of a coffee shop. Then - a throw to the American continent: Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina and the final - in the United States, where in 1964 his memories came out. Nikolai Vsevolodov was already 85 years old. More information about him is not available.

Prayer service in memory of the Council of New Martyrs and Confessors of the Russian Church and laying a wreath at the monument to Admiral A.V. Kolchak, in honor of the 101st anniversary of his death, took place in Irkutsk. This was reported on February 7, 2021 by Oblastnaya.

The event was held by the Irkutsk Cossack military society. On this day (January 25, O.S. style), the Holy Church commemorates all the departed who suffered for the faith of Christ.

- Today the Cossacks of Irkutsk and the Irkutsk region have gathered here to honor the memory of the remarkable naval commander, Arctic explorer and Supreme Commander-in-Chief Alexander Vasilyevich Kolchak. This is a person who chose his fate and did not betray it. 101 years ago, here, at the confluence of the Ushakovka and Angara rivers, his earthly journey ended. A difficult life befell this man. But he was always faithful to duty and to his Fatherland. Life turned so that brother went to brother, father to son. And this is a great lesson for us. We must no longer allow this to happen. Nor should the roots of our historical memory, the memory of our Cossacks be severed. Without roots, the tree will fall and dissolve into oblivion, our Fatherland. Today here we, the Irkutsk Cossack Society, commemorate Alexander Vasilyevich. The regional branch of the Union of Cossacks of Russia is with us. Together we serve for the good of the Motherland for the Orthodox faith.
