Tallinn: restoration of the chapel in memory of the soldiers of the White Russian Northwestern Army

On January 27, 2022, in the capital of Estonia, Tallinn, the restoration of the chapel in honor of the Great Martyr George the Victorious, which is dedicated to the memory of the soldiers of the North-Western Army, who fought against the Bolsheviks during the Civil War, began, reports Foma.Ru.

The rite for the founding of St. George's Chapel, co-served by the clergy, was led by Metropolitan Eugene of Tallinn and All Estonia. The ceremony was attended by Mayor Mihail Kõlvart, who noted that it is important for Estonia to preserve the memory of the Northwestern Army.

“Many Tallinners, including famous people, supported the initiative to restore St. George's Chapel, and one of the inspirers was Evgeny Tomberg. According to Orthodox tradition, donations from parishioners and philanthropists were involved in the restoration of the chapel. We thank everyone who took the restoration of the memorial to heart,” the head of the city said.

During the laying of the chapel, a time capsule was laid in its foundation, where they put a mortgage letter, drawings of the chapel, the latest issue of the Postimees newspaper, the January issue of the Põhja-Tallinn Newspaper, souvenirs and coins.

The Northwestern Army, which fought against the Bolsheviks, was forced to retreat to the territory of Estonia at the end of 1919, where it was disarmed and liquidated. In Estonia, a typhus epidemic began in the ranks of the SZA. Several typhoid hospitals were located in the Tallinn region of Kopli (Koppel). The northwesterners who died in them were buried in the area adjacent to the Koppel Lutheran cemetery. According to researchers, about 700 people were buried in mass graves.

St. George's Chapel was erected in 1936 at the cemetery of the North-Western Army in the Tallinn district of Kopli according to the project of architect Alexander Vladovsky. The chapel is dedicated to the memory of those who died in the Kopli typhoid hospitals of the North-Westerners.

In the late 1940s, the chapel was desecrated and destroyed, and the icon of the Great Martyr George the Victorious, which was in it, was shot, the cemetery of the North-Western Army was destroyed, and an electrical substation was built on its territory.

Preparations for the reconstruction of the chapel began about two years ago. In the autumn of 2021, the project for the reconstruction of the memorial chapel, developed by the architectural bureau AB Ansambel on the order of the St. George Society, was transferred to the Tallinn City Hall. The city allocated the necessary amount for the construction and held a tender to select a contractor.

The walls of the chapel are currently under construction and should be completed by the end of summer 2022. St. George's Chapel is being restored, including on voluntary donations.

The Cossacks of Lugansk commemorated their ancestors who were victims of Communist repression

Cossacks of the LPR commemorated their ancestors who were victims of political repression
Representatives of the Cossacks and the public of the Republic took part in funeral services for the Cossacks, who became victims of political repressions in post-revolutionary Russia of the 20th century.
January 24 is a tragic date in the fate of the Cossacks: on this day in 1919, the Organizing Bureau of the Central Committee of the RCP (b) adopted the secret “directive on decossackization”, developed by the chairman of the All-Russian Central Executive Committee of the RSFSR, Yakov Sverdlov, which laid the foundation for mass repression against representatives of the Cossacks.
Cossacks of all territorial Cossack societies took part in the memorial events. The Cossacks of Lugansk prayed for their ancestors in the church in honor of the icon of the Mother of God "Vladimirskaya" of the Holy Kazan parish and in the church of the holy martyrs Guriy, Samon and Aviv.
“Every year the Cossacks in their yurts and villages go to churches to honor the memory of the repressed Cossacks of 1919. Therefore, we honor and always remember this date, ”said Sergei Dorokhin, ataman of the Lugansk district of the Don Cossacks of the Great Don Army.
Aleksey Selivanov, ataman of the international public organization "Faithful Cossacks", noted that "Cossacks of Russia and the whole world" remember the mourning date today.
“They tried to destroy the Cossacks as the backbone of Russia, as a traditional part of Russian society, as a pearl in the crown of the Russian empire, as people who collected and created Russia, as representatives of a great culture. But the Cossacks were not destroyed - the states on the territory of the Russian Empire are changing. and the Cossacks remained. And the contribution that the Cossacks are making today to protect the fighting Donbass, to the gathering of Russian lands, cannot be overestimated. Cossacks were, are and will be!” he said.
The cleric of the Church of the Holy Martyrs Guria, Samon and Aviv, Archpriest Alexy Slyusarenko, in his sermon after the memorial service, noted that there are no official figures on the number of victims of political terror, since all the archives about this were destroyed, but "a lot of people suffered."
“In fact, no one knows how many extrajudicial reprisals there were - there were no papers left, only God knows how many there were in fact, especially since the repressions against the Cossacks were not limited to 1919 - they continued for many years. This is very bitter, because the Cossacks put a lot of effort into the defense of our Motherland. And even in this last war, as soon as problems began here, the Cossacks were the first to come to the rescue, and they came from all over Russia!
The priest urged to pray in churches and cell prayers for all whose names are known, "and whose names are unknown - God knows about them."
“Save, Lord, you for these prayers. I wish you God's help in your service, in your work in our time, which is also difficult, not easy, so that you, like them, are faithful to God, the Motherland, the Don and, in general, to all the Cossacks, ”added the archpriest.
Recall that with the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, every year on January 24, memorial services are held in Orthodox churches in Russia and around the world for all the murdered Cossacks and their families.

A book about the struggle of the Terek Cossacks against the Bolsheviks during the Civil War published

"Terek Cossacks at the Turn of the Era. Anti-Bolshevik Armed Forces of the Terek Cossacks in the Civil War (1917-1922)" is a new book by Yuri Pyltsyn, published by M. B. Smolin Publishing House (FIV). The publishing house of M. B. Smolin (FIV) published a book by the candidate of historical sciences, head of the Yekaterinburg department of the Russian Imperial Union-Order Yuri Sergeevich Pyltsyn "Terek Cossacks at the turn of the era. Anti-Bolshevik armed formations of the Terek Cossacks in the Civil War (1917-1922)".
The first chapter "On the ruins of the empire (Terek Cossacks in late 1917 - early 1918)" is devoted to the state of the Terek armed forces and the Terek region in the context of growing anarchy and attempts to overcome it at the end of 1917 - 1st half. 1918 (after the October Revolution until the beginning of the Terek uprising). This chapter examines the steps taken by the military government to preserve the Terek military units returning from the front of the Great War and attempts to create new armed formations, attention is paid to the difficult interethnic situation in the region, the role of deserter soldiers in the escalation of the Civil War in the region, the phenomenon of "Cossack Bolshevism" on Terek. Attention is also paid to the attempt of public groups of the Terek region to create a government that suits everyone, which resulted in the holding of the First Congress of the Peoples of the Terek and the role of the Terek Cossack armed formations in this.
The second chapter tells about the Terek uprising of 1918. The chapter describes the internal structure of the insurgent Cossack army and reconstructs the fighting on different fronts of the uprising.
The third chapter "Terek Cossack units as part of the Armed Forces of the South of Russia (AFSUR) and the Russian Army in the Crimea" is the most extensive. The chapter deals with a set of issues related to supply, armament, manning, discipline, morale, attitude towards the White movement and its goals, and other aspects, in relation to the Terek units. The chapter also makes an attempt to reconstruct the Terek Cossacks' battle path on all fronts of the Civil War (starting from the service of the Cossacks in their small homeland - in the Terek-Dagestan region - ending with the service of the Terek Cossacks in the Polish army, in the detachment of Yesaul Yakovlev).
It is worth noting the fourth chapter on the Terek rebellion. The struggle of the Terek Cossacks with the Bolsheviks after the departure of the White Army from 1920-1923. previously not become an independent object of research. The book shows that after the White Army left for the Crimea, the Cossacks did not lay down their arms for a long time. If possible, on the basis of the ChON documents, an attempt was made to describe the course of the partisan and counter-partisan struggle on the Terek in the early 1920s.
To write the book, 303 titles of books and articles (excluding reference publications), 21 titles of newspapers and magazines were used.
The source base of the monograph includes funds of 7 central and 4 regional archives (47 funds in total), 81 published documents, 146 published memoirs and diaries.

The last victory of the Russian Imperial Army

On October 25, 1917, the last victory of the Russian Imperial Army was won in the deserts of Iran. A detachment of the Caucasian expeditionary corps under the command of the military foreman of the 1st Gorsko-Mozdok regiment Lazar Bicherakhov forced 2,500 Persian gendarmes to surrender. In World War I, the vast expanses of Mesopotamia turned out to be the arena of hostilities. In Iraq, at Al-Kut, the Turks defeated the 31,000-strong British corps - 8,000 soldiers and officers were taken prisoner led by the commander General Townsend. Neutral Iran was involved in the war zone, where Islamist groups and regular Turkish troops hunted.

To save the British allies in 1915, the corps of General Nikolai Baratov entered Persia. However, two years later, units of the Caucasian corps found themselves in a difficult situation - the Turks and Persians intended to cut communications between the Russians and the British.

"General Baratov got Bicherakhov to advance to the Diale River and intercept the three thousandth enemy army, which was trying to cut communications between the Russians and the British. The Russian Empire was no longer there, the army was crumbling, and Bicherakhov's detachment turned out to be the only force capable of carrying out such a complex operation," writes in his research, the candidate of historical sciences Aleksey Bezugolny.

In August 1917, the formation of the detachment of Lieutenant Colonel Lazar Bicherakhov began in the Persian city of Kermanshah. In the "partisans" - so in the Russian army then army special forces were called, only volunteers were enrolled. Soon, under the command of Bicherakhov, there were 1000 Terek and Kuban Cossacks with 30 officers. It was armed with a large number of cannons and machine guns.

The detachment was given the task, as stated in the order, "to unite the Russian Persian and British Mesopotamian fronts." Lazar Fyodorovich did the job brilliantly. In a week, his Cossacks made a difficult march through the waterless mountainous terrain and reached the town of Kasri-Shirin, where they occupied both banks of the Diale River. A few days later, units of the Persian gendarmerie approached the same place.

"Having tried to break through to the water, the gendarmes met fierce resistance from Bicherakhov's fighters. The gendarmes could not retreat back into the desert - there was no water. On October 25, 1917, when the revolution was taking place in Petrograd, the last victory of the Russian army was won in Persia - 2500 thirsty Persians The gendarmes surrendered to Bicherakhov's detachment. The threat to the Expeditionary Force was removed, "writes Bezugolny.

However, it was necessary to establish contact with the British. The detachment set off on a march in the direction of the city of Mendeli. Since they had to take numerous prisoners for rations, food soon ran out, water was running out. Emaciated, hungry and thirsty, people and horses struggled to overcome the steep ridges of southern Persia. “There was no end to them and as soon as one was overcome, another would grow before our eyes,” one of the officers recalled.

After a week of difficult transition, during which people died from thirst and jaundice, the detachment met with the forward patrols of the British Hindu Cavalry Regiment, which was already waiting for it. The British met the Cossacks with an orchestra and arranged a solemn parade for them.

Residents of Serafimovich honored the memory of the dead Cossacks in the Russian Civil War

Exactly 21 years ago, the Cross of Reconciliation was installed on Mount Pyramida near Serafimovich in memory of all the killed Cossacks: white and red. Several generations of local residents thought about installing such a memorial sign. And so it happened on December 2, 2000. - On that day in the morning, Cossacks, residents of the city, nearby villages and farms gathered at the Church of the Resurrection of Christ in Serafimovich, - recalls the chairman of the Council of Old Men of the Ust-Medveditsky Cossack Yurt Grigory Vypryashkin. - The procession to the place of the installation of the cross through the whole city was blessed and led by Metropolitan German of Volgograd and Kamyshinsky. He also served a requiem for the killed Cossacks and consecrated the cross. The Cossacks are still grateful to Vladyka German for the fact that he personally took part in these events. As the former Metropolitan of Volgograd and Kamyshinsky himself noted then, the road to this place on Mount Pyramid will never be forgotten. This has been the case for 21 years now. On solemn dates and weekdays, Cossacks come to the Cross of Reconciliation, young people lay fresh flowers, and participants of the White Doves of the Don festival release white doves into the blue sky. To prevent the Don land from knowing more civil strife and bloodshed, today the Ust-Medveditsa Cossacks have once again come to honor the memory of the fallen.Волгоградская правда

In the Kuban, they want to restore a monument to the Cossacks-lineers

The Cossacks of the Labinsky department held a motor rally along the first villages founded by the lineers. The Labinsk cordon line was created in the form of a series of fortresses protecting the lands of the Russian Empire from the raids of the highlanders. The offensive of the Russian troops under the command of Major General Zass led to the fact that the front lines of the empire expanded from the Kuban into the mountains. In 1841, on the Labinsk line, the Cossacks founded a number of villages, thereby creating logistical support for the regiments protecting the borders of Russia. The Linz Cossacks decided to hold a motor rally, timed to coincide with the 180th anniversary of the formation of the first stanitsas of the Labinskaya line. They started from the regional center, visiting two villages: Temirgoevskaya and Kaladzhinskaya. The chief of staff of the Labinsky department, Alexander Krasovsky, a person who is keenly interested in the history of the Linemen, a participant in the reenactments of the battles of the Volunteer Army in the Kuban, acquainted the participants of the race with a historical background.

- During the visit to the Kuban of Emperor Alexander II, the august ataman of all Cossack troops, after being in Yekaterinodar, he visited the upper reaches of the Laba. The Tsar examined the newly formed villages of Kaladzhinskaya, Andryukovskaya and Labinskaya. I met with veterans of the line Cossack brigades and received a delegation of the mountaineers who expressed their obedience after the long Caucasian war, - said Alexander Krasovsky.

The Cossacks visited the places where the autocrat, who was called the tsar-peacemaker, stepped almost two centuries ago. The delegation visited the site of the monument to the Cossacks of the line regiments who died in battles with the mountaineers and died of wounds.

- This race has strengthened us in the desire to restore the monument to the Cossacks-Lineers. In 1914, our ancestors thought: if there is a monument to the Black Sea Cossacks, then why is the Linear not the same? They collected money for its construction, but they themselves did not do anything, since such structures at that time could only be built with the permission of the emperor. They turned with a request to the chieftain of the Kuban region, Mikhail Babich, and he, in turn, to the sovereign. Having received the royal permission, the Cossacks erected a monument to the founders of the villages of the Labinskaya Line. One of them was in the village of Labinskaya, the other in Voznesenskaya. During the years of Soviet power, the monuments were destroyed. We want to recreate one of them in its original form. We carried out a lot of research work in the regional archive, but, unfortunately, did not find the project of the monument. Now we are working with St. Petersburg museums and archives, where it may have survived, - said Alexander Krasovsky.

The Cossacks of the Labinsky department are ready to build a monument at their own expense, perpetuating the memory of their ancestors.

Chamlyk commemoration: The memory of the White Cossacks who were killed in 1918 honored

The memory of the Cossacks who died during the revolutionary battles was honored on June 7th in the Kuban. The Chamlyk commemoration took place in the region. They are dedicated to the Trinity Uprising, which became one of the most tragic pages in the history of the Cossacks.

The veneration cross, at which commemorations are held, is installed on the ground, watered with blood. Here, on the outskirts of the village of Chamlyk, Labinsk district, 30 Cossacks were executed. In total, according to historians, the Trinity uprising claimed more than 1,000 lives in Chamlyk and neighboring Labinskaya, Vladimirskaya, Voznesenskaya and Upornaya stanitsas.

The prayer service is dedicated to the events of 1918. On the eve of Trinity, the Cossacks of several Kuban villages tried to resist the new regime, which destroyed the age-old way of life, order and foundations of an entire people. The participants in the uprising planned to reach Armavir, but already in the village of Labinskaya, the mutiny was stopped. The retreat attempt also failed. The Reds, combing the forest, shot some and captured others. Subsequently, they were chopped down with swords in front of the ir relatives.

“Probably only the Lord knows how much sorrow the people endured, the relatives of all those killed on both sides - from the Cossacks, from the Red Army. Now it is becoming clear to us what was lacking then - firmness, prudence, ”says Bishop of Armavir and Labinsky Vasily.

In order for new generations to remember the cruel lessons of history, every year regional societies of the Labinsk Cossack department, representatives of the administration of the municipality, deputies and students of cadet classes gather at the worship cross.

“The commemorations that the Kuban Cossack army holds annually is a connection with that difficult time when the Cossack, who defended the Fatherland, had to defend himself and his families. The Cossack plowed, the Cossack fought, and in an instant everything turned upside down - the brother went against the brother, the son went against the father, ”says Sergei Zakharov, deputy chieftain of the Kuban Cossack army.

“God grant that this does not happen again. So that a clear, peaceful sky is overhead and that we are going to only remember those who are not with us on this occasion. I would like to wish all those who are now alive to live, work, and benefit our state and our native Kuban, ”says the ataman of the Labinsk Cossack Department, Viktor Verzunov.

According to various historians, at the beginning of the twentieth century, the Cossack estate in the Russian Empire numbered about 4.5 million people. They died on the fronts of the Civil War, some emigrated abroad after the revolution, others were repressed. But even during the years of persecution, it was not possible to uproot faith and craving for the traditions of their ancestors.

On the way to the revival, the Kuban Cossacks have made a difficult path. Only in the Labinsky district, 64 specialized classes are now open at schools for those children who in the future want to serve their country. After all, modern Cossacks are not just keepers of customs. They participate in the maintenance of order, cultivate the land and, of course, carry out patriotic work. Those who distinguished themselves in this field were invited to commemoration in order to present awards.
